Every interviewer finishes the interview with, “Do you have any questions for us/me?”. Even though it is an exceptionally common question, the majority of candidates do not bother to put forward any questions. There is no denying that it is a missed opportunity as this is one of the most important interview questions you will be asked. Do not stress out as we have curated excellent questions you can ask your interviewer.
However, before we explore the questions, it is important to understand why you should never say “no” when your interviewer wants you to ask questions.
Why should you ask questions from your interviewer?
When you come across any TEFL jobs, naturally you have doubts and questions that need to be answered. But the pressure of preparing for interviews and expectations of getting your dream job overwhelms most candidates and soon all questions and hesitation you had earlier goes on the back-burner.
Nonetheless, countless studies have shown that asking the right questions establishes a good impression among the interviewers. You not only sound confident but it signifies how interested you are in the job which is considered to be an important factor. Contrary to that, your lack of questions can express a lack of desire and engagement in the job. Therefore, next time you prepare for an interview, make sure to leave a lasting impression by asking relevant questions about the job.
The Questions to Ask
The School and Environment
- What curriculum does the school use?
- What resources does the school have? How do I get additional resources?
- Is there a dress code to be followed?
- What is the typical class size?
- What is the atmosphere among the teachers in the school?
- Can you share what a typical day in your school is like?
- Do you provide training or workshops for improvement?
- How many working hours in a day/week?
The Compensation
- What is the payment schedule followed by your organization?
- Do you offer paid or unpaid holidays?
- Are the flight, visa, and health insurance costs covered by you?
- What is the policy on sick days?
- Am I expected to work overtime? Is it paid?
- What are my options for promotion or progression?
- Do you provide accommodation or provide an accommodation stipend?
- Policy on bonuses
Miscellaneous
- Is there a co-teacher or teaching assistant?
- Are there a lot of teachers at the school who have been there for multiple years?
- Will I need to work in more than one school or location?
- Can I contact a previous or current teacher to learn more about your facility?
Even though you do not have to ask all these questions, it is recommended to write down their answers to your questions. This practice allows you to ensure that everything they promised you verbally is mentioned on the final contract as well. If you feel the salary offered by them is inadequate, do not hesitate to negotiate with a friendly and warm conversation.
Eventually, do not commit right away. It is always a good idea to request some time over to evaluate all the details with a calm mind. After all, it is your dream job.
